Commentary Magazine has a thought provoking column about Jim Wallis and his efforts to give cover to progressive politicians and their defense of current social spending levels by asking “what Jesus would cut”. Peter Wehner makes some great points. I agree with him that scripture should not be used by either side as justification for political policy. Social justice is a matter of the heart, informed by faith. It is immediately corrupted as soon as it is touched by the State.
Tony Campolo (who has joined Jim Wallis in his efforts) spoke several years ago at my church. I know where Tony stands and I think he sensed where most of our congregation stands as he pretty much steered clear of most of this during his presentation if memory serves correctly.
